Bench
Stillness Amidst the City's Perpetual Motion
2025 - Hong Kong
As a photographer, I observe the city and its people. I enjoy seeing them engage in their daily activities, whether they are actively working or simply being in the moment, lost in their thoughts. The bench, in its simplicity, serves as a place where one can just be, offering a respite from the constant need to do something. It is a place for rest, a place to gather, and a place for the community.
Roaming around Hong Kong for many years, I’ve noticed a wide range of well-designed and strategically placed benches. These benches fascinate me not only for their physical form but also for the meaning they hold. They make me ponder what a bench is, what it symbolizes, what it can become, and what it has been throughout time. More than mere objects, benches are integral parts of our cityscape, serving as stages for shared stories.
Benches provide a sense of tranquility amidst the rush of daily life. They invite us to sit, relax, and momentarily disconnect from the bustling world. These humble seats transform otherwise unremarkable spaces into places of potential respite and contemplation, offering ideal settings for personal reflection and introspection.
Beyond individual reflection, benches foster community and social interaction. They serve as meeting points where friends can gather, strangers can start conversations, and communities can connect. Benches bridge gaps between people, encouraging dialogue and camaraderie. As silent witnesses to shared experiences, they contribute to the rich tapestry of urban life.
