BEAUTIFIED CHINA

The Architectural Revolution

2019, Lannoo

4 years after publishing the first artworks of what would later be named ‘Beautified China’, the collection of 100 artworks was published in the coffee-table book “Beautified China - The Architectural Revolution”

The book was published by leading Belgian publisher Lannoo in 2019.

Besides the 100 artworks, 5 essays were published by leading China design voices including Li Shiqiao (Professor at University of Virginia) , Chris Hardie (Partner at Schmidt Hammer Lassen / Perkins Will), Martijn De Geus (Associate Professor at Tsinghua University) , Peter Rowe (Professer at Harvard GSD) and Nikolaus Goetze (Partner at GMP Architekten)

From the book:

‘ It all started around thirteen years ago. As China preparing to host the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, the architecture they were planning to build was bolder, more daring and much larger. After graduating as an architect, Kris Provoost

decided to go see all this with his own eyes. Living in Beijing, Shanghai and now Hong Kong, Kris has experienced architecture as an omnipresent factor in his life. While living and working across China, he was able to understand first-hand what a strong influence architecture can have. Not only on how a city looks, functions or develops, but also on how that city represents itself. This is where the iconic architecture of Beautified China comes into the spotlight. Beautified China is a selection of the most striking modern buildings that have been erected in the country. From arched skyscrapers, infinity loops, and stacked chopsticks to moving tubular curtains, and so much more. ‘
