La Biennale di Venezia, Hong Kong Pavilion

Venice, Italy

2023, May - November

In collaboration with: Building Narrative

Building Narrative and Kris Provoost Photography are pleased to present a short film on Hong Kong public housing amenities at the 18th Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition. The film will feature in the Hong Kong Exhibition entitled Transformative Hong Kong; the Laboratory of the Future.

In response to curator Lesley Lokko’s call for exhibitors to imagine a “more equitable and optimistic future in common”, our film Common Ground; Constructing Civic Spaces of the Future delves into lessons from Hong Kong social housing estates constructed between 1967 and 2005. At the centre of each project is a desire to sculpt the ground, both natural and constructed, into a piece of public amenity that forms the heart of each residential community – an especially challenging task given the city’s demanding topography.

Beautified China - Beijing Photo Week

Beijing, China

2020, November - December

This exhibition took place in November to December 2020 in Beijing, China. It was part of Beijing Photo Week and marked the 6th installment of the City Reflections program initiated by Roca Beijing in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. When Beijing went into lockdown and cultural venues closed, Roca Beijing launched City Reflections to provide a continuous cultural injection into the city. The program featured large-screen exhibitions displayed on digital screen visible from a large distance.

Beautified China opened with an on-site event, offering an insightful dialogue among Martijn de Geus (Tsinghua, co-founder of maison h), Roberto Bannura (partner at Steven Holl Architects), and Andy Wen (Global Design Principal at Aedas), providing insights into the visual representation of their projects .

Take A Seat

Hong Kong

2020, November - December

In collaboration with: Building Narrative

Take a Seat is an exhibition mounted at Chun Shek Estate, Hong Kong. The exhibition explores a ubiquitous symbol of housing estate public life – the humble bench. Benches are often crafted to reflect the architectural language of their estate. Their designs make use of robust materials and vibrant colours. While benches naturally serve as dignified places for resting, they also play a role in the design and structure of the civic realm and signify the public’s right to public space.

The installation, placed in the atrium of the Chun Shek Shopping Centre, comprises a bench and an exhibition display stand. The bench, which draws inspiration from other housing estates, substitutes four benches displaced during a recent renovation of the atrium, re-introducing a lost public amenity. The exhibit serves to re-assert the public’s claim to the space, if only temporarily.
